Experts have strongly advised health professionals to get modern training. This is to improve their skills in plastic and reconstructive surgery. By doing so, they can help people with deformities and prevent disabilities.

These suggestions were made at the four-day 29th Annual International Conference on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which ended in Peshawar on Tuesday. The event was organized by the Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS). More than 350 delegates took part, and among them were 50 international experts.

The conference started with three pre-conference workshops. These workshops focused on specific areas: cleft surgery, hypospadiology surgery, and supermicro surgery. An international group of experts led the sessions. This group included Prof Brian Sommerlad from the UK, Prof Taimoor AlBulushi from Oman, Prof Neil Brieley from the UK, Prof Ahmad Talha Hadidi from Germany, Prof Seref Etker from Turkiye, Prof Zhegang Zhou from China, Prof Zhang Yi from China, Prof Yang Yi from China, Dr Mansoor Khan from Pakistan, and Prof Obaidullah from Pakistan.

Prof Zhegang Zhou gave a presentation about research. The research looked into how lymphatic surgery could potentially be used to treat patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

During the conference, there were sessions on burn, aesthetic, and breast surgeries. These sessions were conducted by a very good panel of experts. The panel included Dr Khalid Khan from Belfast, Ireland, Dr Riaz Malik from the UK, Dr Omar Ahmad from the UK, Dr Azhar Malik from the UK, Dr. Ciaran O’Boyle from Ireland, and Dr Abid Rashid from Ireland.

Prof Emre Hocaoglu from Turkiye and Prof Mark Fisher from the USA also shared their vast surgical knowledge and experience. The President of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, Dr Paul McArthur, gave important keynote lectures on hand surgery.

Many Pakistani plastic surgeons also contributed their expertise. They were Prof. Mamoon, Prof Farid, Prof Tajjumal Choudhry, Prof Ashraf Ghanatra, and Prof Ghulam Qadir Fayaz.

Prof Tahmeedullah, who is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and the President of PAPS, said that the conference was very important. It created new chances for young Pakistani plastic surgeons. It also provided them with very valuable training and helped build a global network for collaboration.

He thanked the organizing team, which included Dr Shadman, Dr Qazi Amjad, Dr Nasir Hayat, Dr Waqas Hayat, and Dr Adeeba, for making the conference a success.

Prof Taimoor AlBulushi from Oman offered to help set up a craniofacial surgery centre in Peshawar. The Pakistani medical community was very happy about this offer.

Khyber Medical University (KMU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ziaul Haq, who was the chief guest, announced a partnership with the Burn & Plastic Surgery Centre. This partnership will offer specialized diplomas in burn and plastic surgery.

He said that under the leadership of Prof Dr Tahmeedullah, the university had signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement is to introduce a Nursing Diploma in Burns & Plastic Surgery and an Advanced Diploma in Burn Surgery for young plastic surgeons.
