The Federal Drug Administration has released a big report. It’s about saline- or silicone-filled breast implants. There were 10,318 cases between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2024, where people reported “breast implant illness, generalized or unexplained illness, or unexplained systemic symptoms”.
In 6,191 cases (which is 60% of the total), the average age of the patients was 42.6. In 76% of the cases, the time from getting the breast implants to the start of the symptoms was 5.6 years. There were also several reports about children born to women with breast implants. These reports seemed to show that the children had symptoms or events that could be because of their mothers’ implants.
Out of the 10,318 reports, 4,210 (or 41%) said the patient had the device removed. On average, this happened nine years after the symptoms started. Since 2011, the FDA has identified 1,380 cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. The FDA said that these symptoms have been reported with all types of breast implants, no matter what they are filled with, their shape, or their surface characteristic. The symptoms can show up right after the implantation or even years later.
