Pop star Cher has been defying expectations ever since she first became famous in the 1960s as part of the duo Sonny & Cher.
This weekend, the superstar once again grabbed the spotlight. She gave a stunning performance at the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, dazzling thousands of people.
The 78-year-old icon sang her 1989 hit “If I Could Turn Back Time” with great power. Many famous people, like Kevin Costner and Will Ferrell, were in the audience. They were amazed by how youthful Cher looked.
But cosmetic surgery experts told MailOnline that Cher’s incredibly youthful appearance is not natural.
Cher, whose real name is Cheryl Sarkisian, has admitted to having a nose job and a facelift in the past. However, surgeons said that these are probably just two of many cosmetic procedures she has had.
They suggested that the actress from “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” may have had other treatments too. These could include dental work, fat transfer to her face, and surgery to reshape the corners of her eyes.
Dr Vincent Wong, a cosmetic doctor in London, thinks Cher may have had a brow lift. This can lift the forehead and brows, making a person look more alert and wide-eyed.
He told MailOnline, “Cher looks really great. She has said she got facelifts to keep her face looking lifted and young. Facelifts help to tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, and smooth out the skin.”
Dr Wong also said that besides facelifts, he believes Cher may have had eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty. This can fix any sagging skin around the eyes and make them look more open.
He added that Cher previously admitted to having a rhinoplasty, which is why her nose has a “more refined” shape now. A rhinoplasty, or nose job, can be done either from inside the nostrils (a closed rhinoplasty) or by making a small cut on the nose. Surgeons can break and reposition the side nasal bone to make the nose narrower.
Dr Wong said that Cher, who is dating music executive Alexander “AE” Edwards, 40 years younger than her, “likely also uses Botox and filler.” Botox can relax the muscles to smooth out fine lines, and filler can restore volume to the cheeks and under the eyes, which lose volume as we age.
Fillers, usually injections of collagen or hyaluronic acid, can be bought in beauty clinics for as little as £75. Although they are supposed to last about 18 months, MRI scans show that filler can move around and stay in the face for years after it’s supposed to dissolve.
Dr Wong also noted that Cher may have had less invasive facial cosmetic treatments like SylfirmX. This treatment uses technology to deal with skin problems like redness, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea. It’s also good for tightening the skin and improving its texture by making collagen and elastin. Other clinic treatments and good medical-grade skincare in a regular routine can help keep her skin looking fresh and young.
Meanwhile, Dr Paul Banwell, an award-winning consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon in Sussex, thinks Cher may have had “collagen-boosting treatments” such as polynucleotides or Profhilo.
He said, “Polynucleotides are a regenerative treatment called an injectable bio-stimulator. This can give a youthful glow that helps celebrities get that nice look on the red carpet.” Some people say polynucleotides are a “natural” alternative to Botox and filler. They usually use purified and sterilized DNA molecules from salmon or trout sperm, which have anti-inflammatory effects. When these polynucleotides are injected into the skin, they activate fibroblasts, which are important for the skin’s structure but decrease as we age. Injecting polynucleotides under the eyes, in the cheekbones, or in the neck can theoretically make the skin look younger.
Dr Kiren Sandhu, the clinical lead at London-based Tooth Club, told MailOnline that Cher likely had “orthodontic treatment and cosmetic dental procedures” to keep her smile looking great.
She said, “Early in her career, Cher talked about having braces to make her smile more even. I think since then, she may have chosen to get veneers for a more perfect and uniform smile.”
Professor Jesús Olivas Menay, a plastic surgeon in Lisbon, suggested that the Oscar-winning Cher may have had liposuction to shape her body and get rid of stubborn fat.
He also said she may have had a less invasive body treatment like QuantumRF 25. This is very effective for shaping the body and making the skin firmer. It uses radio-frequency energy to tighten the skin, reduce fat, and improve the overall body shape. It’s often used on the thighs and arms to make them look better and less flabby.
He said, “It’s very possible she used this treatment to keep her skin tight and young while getting rid of stubborn fat. It can also reduce the signs of cellulite, and Cher doesn’t seem to have much of that.”
Last year, Dr Gary Linkov, a top plastic surgeon in New York, said that Cher may have had a fat transfer to her face, as well as filler in her cheeks and lips.
In a TikTok video that was watched more than 28,000 times, he said, “When Cher was 53, she may have had her first facelift. By the time she was 66, I think she had her second facelift surgery.”
The pop legend has always been honest about the cosmetic work she’s had done.
In 1984, when talking to British broadcaster Terry Wogan, she said, “If I needed to have something done, I would definitely be the first one to go to the doctor.” She also mentioned that her mother had a facelift when she was 56.
In 1988, when there were rumors that she had a rib removal surgery to make her waist smaller, she said, “I’ve been open about having my nose done, my breasts done, and having braces on my teeth. The rest of the rumors are not true.”
And in 2018, she told the Mail on Sunday, “Yes, I’ve had a facelift, but who hasn’t?”
