A Florida Department of Health administrative complaint against a Fort Lauderdale doctor claims that liposuction procedures left holes in a man’s chest muscle and other areas, ultimately leading to his death. This serious allegation is not only made in the complaint against Dr. Don Ray Revis, Jr. According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s record of a $250,000 insurance payout, the “principal injury” stated in the claim was that “The patient ultimately died as a result of the liposuction due to a complication of perforations.”
The complaint details that a 58-year-old man identified as “W.H.” underwent liposuction using VASER (vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance, which is a type of ultrasound, as explained in an article from the National Library of Medicine) in January 2021. Then, on February 23, 2022, he returned to South Florida Plastic Surgery, located at 4200 N. Federal Hwy., for another liposuction procedure.
The complaint points out that “Repeat VASER-assisted liposuction comes with additional potential risks, such as perforation, because of the scarring caused by the first procedure.” It also states that “[Revis] failed to document any conversation with W.H. about the extra risks involved in a second liposuction procedure.” Just two days after the second procedure, W.H. was found unconscious at his home and was rushed to Aventura Hospital. He was admitted there with a diagnosis of “severe sepsis.”
The autopsy, as mentioned in the complaint, showed “multiple perforations” in several areas. These areas included the gall bladder bed, the middle part of the small intestines, a membrane that connects the colon to the abdominal wall, as well as a chest muscle and an abdominal muscle. The complaint further states that “The standard of care expected from a physician requires that they do not cause repeated intra-abdominal perforations while performing VASER-assisted liposuction.”
