A cosmetic surgery center in a local area on the northeast side of Ames has suddenly shut down. The reason for its closure remains unknown.
Sturm Cosmetic Surgery, which is located at 1405 Baltimore Drive, is no longer taking appointments. This is according to a notice that is stuck on the front door of the center. All scheduled surgical appointments have been canceled.
It’s not clear when the business officially closed. Its website (https://sturmcosmetic.com) is no longer working and has been completely cleared of information.
The notice, signed by Dr. Lindsay Sturm and the Sturm Cosmetics Surgery Team, says, “This decision wasn’t made easily. We want to thank our patients for their trust and support.” According to the Iowa State Board of Medicine’s website, the center was run by Dr. Lindsay Sturm. She is a licensed doctor who specializes in full-body cosmetic surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, otolaryngology, and facial plastic surgery. As of Wednesday, her medical license is still valid.
Dr. Sturm graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, A.T. Still University in 2012. She is also certified by the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery. The Iowa State Board of Medicine shows that Dr. Sturm was born in 1984. The Ames Tribune hasn’t been able to find out how many employees worked at Sturm Cosmetic Surgery. The Tribune also tried to ask the Iowa Workforce Development about possible layoffs but didn’t get an answer.
In 2023, Sturm Cosmetic Surgery expanded its Ames facility.
According to the contractor’s website, Twin Shores carried out the construction of Sturm Cosmetic Surgery’s new 6,300-square-foot building in January 2023. A Twin Shores testimonial says, “The office has a nice lobby with modern decoration, exam rooms, and an independent surgery center.” On Monday, the doors of Sturm Cosmetic Surgery were locked, and there were no cars in the parking lot.
The message on the door is similar to the automated voice message that you hear when you call the company’s phone number.
The signed notice says, “We’re really sorry for any trouble caused by these cancellations. Please don’t worry. We’re trying to make this transition as smooth as we can.” According to the company’s voicemail, current patients will be contacted with more information. Patients who need ongoing medical care have been told to find another doctor “to keep getting the right medical treatment.”
Even though there are no criminal charges against Dr. Sturm, she is involved in two malpractice lawsuits in Story County. These lawsuits accuse her of being negligent. One of them is said to have led to a patient’s death. A lawsuit filed on May 20, 2024, claims that Dr. Sturm caused injuries to a patient during surgery, which is said to have caused a massive hemorrhage and the patient’s death.
On July 10, 2024, a response was filed denying these accusations.
The Ames Tribune tried to contact Dr. Sturm’s lawyers on Tuesday but didn’t get a reply.
