A plastic surgeon in Taiwan has sparked controversy after he performed a vasectomy on himself, calling it a “gift” to his wife. He shared a video of the procedure on Jan. 9, which has been viewed more than 4 million times online and sparked a heated discussion on social media.

Chen Weinong, a plastic surgeon who specializes in eye, nose and breast augmentation, treated burn patients before opening his own plastic surgery clinic in Taipei. A father of three, he decided to have a vasectomy because of his and his wife’s ages.

Chen believed in his skills, and as he performed the surgery, he recorded a video explaining the 11 steps of the procedure, including locating the vas deferens, administering anesthesia, cutting the skin, lapping the vas deferens and closing the wound. He performed the operation cross-legged and narrated throughout, at one point Shouting: “Oh, this hurts so much!” Then added: “It feels so strange.” Typical vasectomy procedures take about 15 minutes, but Chen’s self-inflicted surgery lasted more than an hour, leaving him exhausted. He admitted to feeling pain that night, but felt much lighter the next morning.

The video has drawn mixed reactions from netizens. Some netizens questioned Chen’s qualifications as a plastic surgeon to perform urinary surgery. But Mr. Chen defended himself, saying he had a surgical license and that the operation was conducted under the supervision of a urologist, a nurse and three doctors.

“The surgery was self-financed and carried out in a legally authorised location,” he explained. According to Taiwan’s FTV News, the Taipei City Health Bureau confirmed his qualifications and confirmed that there were no legal problems with the surgery. A local official also mentioned that it is not uncommon for male doctors to perform vasectomies on themselves.

Despite his successful surgery, Chen urged the public not to imitate him. He warned: “Having a vasectomy done at home is extremely dangerous. I strongly recommend consulting a professional urologist.” The video has been shared more than 100,000 times, with netizens expressing both praise and concern. Some viewers praised Chen’s thoughtfulness, with one commenting: “You are so thoughtful. Men recover much faster from sterilization than women.” Others expressed concern about untrained people attempting the procedure, saying: “Please consult a professional, it’s inexpensive and quick.”
