Simona Halep, a name that resounds in the annals of tennis history, has recently made the bittersweet decision to retire from professional tennis. Her departure from the sport leaves behind a legacy that is as remarkable as it is inspiring.
For young girls in Romania, the path to the pinnacle of tennis is strewn with more obstacles than in many other countries. The Romanian national tennis federation lacks the financial muscle to catapult a player to the very top of the sport. However, Halep defied these odds and reached the zenith of tennis success.
At a young age, Halep faced a unique challenge that required a significant sacrifice. She decided to undergo breast reduction surgery. Reflecting on this life – changing decision, she said, “My ability to react quickly was worse and my breasts made me uncomfortable. It’s the weight that troubles me. When I did it, I did it for tennis. Doing that was really important to be No 1. I didn’t like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadn’t been a sportswoman.” This bold move paid off handsomely. The surgery improved her mobility on the court, allowing her to make a successful transition to the professional circuit. In 2013, she won her first WTA Tour final on clay in Germany, setting the stage for a glorious career filled with numerous achievements.
Over the course of her career, Halep amassed an impressive 24 career titles. She had her fair share of heartbreaks in the early Grand Slam finals, losing her first three in nail – biting contests. But her perseverance and determination shone through when she clinched her first major title at the 2018 French Open, defeating America’s Sloane Stephens in the final. This victory was a turning point in her career. The following year, in 2019, she etched her name further in tennis history by delivering a resounding 6 – 2, 6 – 2 victory over the tennis legend Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final. These triumphs not only brought her glory but also substantial financial rewards. Her final career earnings of $40,232,663 place her third on the tennis rich list, surpassed only by Serena and Venus Williams.
However, Halep’s story is not without its controversies. In September 2023, she was hit with a four – year ban after testing positive for roxadustat, a drug used to treat anaemia, and irregularities in her blood passport. This was a devastating blow to her career and reputation. But she fought back, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the suspension to nine months, accepting her explanation of a contaminated supplement. By the time the reduced ban was announced, she had already been away from the game for nearly a year and a half.
Despite the doping saga, Halep’s achievements on the court cannot be overstated. She was ranked world No 1 twice between 2017 and 2019 for a total of 64 weeks, and was the year – end No 1 in 2017 and 2018. She was a consistent presence in the top 10 for 373 consecutive weeks from 2014 to 2021.
When she announced her retirement after a first – round loss at the Transylvania Open in Cluj, she said, “I don’t know if it’s with sadness or joy – I think I’m feeling both – but my soul is at peace with this decision, and I’ve always been realistic with myself. My body can no longer handle as much as it used to, to get me where I probably once was. It’s very hard to reach that level, and I know what it takes to get there. That’s why I wanted to be here today, in Cluj, to play in front of you and say goodbye on the tennis court, even if my performance wasn’t great.”
Simona Halep will be remembered as one of the all – time greats of tennis. Her journey from a young Romanian girl with a dream to a Grand Slam champion, despite the financial hardships of her country’s tennis system and personal challenges like breast reduction surgery and a doping suspension, is a testament to her indomitable spirit. She leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of tennis players to strive for greatness, no matter what obstacles they may face.
