Pete Broadhurst is a 79-year-old man from Birmingham, England. He went to a private hospital because his face was swollen and he was not confident about his looks. He spent £11,000 on a neck lift, blepharoplasty and a nose job. The doctor said the surgery would fix the swollen face.
On January 24, 2024, Grandpa underwent nine hours of surgery and was released from the hospital the next day. When he went to have his stitches removed two weeks later, he said his eyes were dry and watery. The medical staff said it was a normal symptom after surgery, and it would go away.
But two months later, on March 23, 2024, Grandpa went to another hospital for a check-up, and doctors found that he could not close his eyes when he blinked or slept. This is a common complication of eyelid surgery – ectropion.
There was no way. Grandpa went back to the private hospital where he had the surgery. On May 13, 2024, doctors performed a free repair operation on him. After surgery, his right eye was fine, but he still couldn’t close his left eye.
Half a year later, my left eye still can’t close. This caused a lot of trouble in his life. He takes eye drops eight times a day, otherwise his eyes become dry. His eyesight became so bad that he could not drive and could not read people’s faces. At night, he had to tape his eyelids to close his eyes. He thinks he looks horrible, and he doesn’t really connect with people anymore.
Private hospitals in the UK dare not operate on Grandpa again, for fear of making his eyesight worse. Waiting in the NHS queue is at least a year. He went to a clinic in Turkey in January 2025 for a £7,000 operation and will have to go for a follow-up operation later in the year. The doctor who operated on him has been suspended. Grandpa made his experience public, just to remind everyone that plastic surgery should be done carefully, the risk is very big.
