Beauty lovers in Venezuela are now facing a serious shortage of branded implants for breast augmentation.
Venezuela has long been one of the countries with the highest rates of cosmetic surgery, and breast augmentation surgery is a popular item. Previously, it was easy for Venezuelans to obtain implants approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Now, however, because of strict currency controls, local businesses do not have enough money to import foreign goods, and these implants are almost impossible to find.
Faced with this situation, beauty-loving Venezuelan women and their doctors have to look elsewhere. Some have had to opt for implants that are not the right size or made in China, where quality standards are less stringent.
Doctors at the Metropolitan Ambulatory Surgical Center in Caracas say many women are complaining about the problem. Venezuelan women are very concerned about their self-esteem and appearance, and breast augmentation surgery is important for them. Walk down any street in Caracas and it’s obvious that there are more people with breast implants than in other places that are keen on cosmetic surgery, and even mannequins look like they’ve had them done.
While there are no official statistics on how many Venezuelans have undergone breast augmentation surgery, the shortage of implants is causing a major problem for local beauty-conscious women.
