In June 2024, 46 – year – old electrician Aaron James from Arkansas, USA, suffered a 7200 – volt electric shock. He lost his left arm, left eye, chin, and nose, plunging his life into hardship.

On January 13, 2025, at NYU Langone Health Center, over 140 surgeons carried out the world’s first full – face and whole – eye transplant on him. The operation, lasting about 21 hours, was highly complex, especially the eye transplant due to its delicate structure.

After the surgery, the transplanted eye shows positive signs like normal pressure, blood flow, and light – reactive retina. Aaron can smell again, saw his new face, and has gradually returned to normal life.

The operation was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Experts say it’s a major step, though full vision restoration is still a challenge. This surgery offers new hope for patients with severe facial and eye injuries.
