Several case reports have suggested a potential link between breast implants and the development of eczema in some individuals, though scientists are still working to understand why this occurs. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed as possible causes, but no definitive explanation has been confirmed.
Researchers believe the eczema may be triggered by several factors, including:
Allergy or Sensitivity: An allergic reaction or sensitivity to the materials used in the implants.
Inflammatory Response: The body might detect the implant as a foreign object, leading to an inflammatory reaction.
Disruption of Skin Glands: Implants may interfere with skin glands that produce oil, potentially causing skin dryness and irritation.
Despite these theories, research has not conclusively confirmed any of these as the sole cause. It’s also important to note that most individuals tolerate silicone breast implants without experiencing adverse effects.
A 2015 study involving 1,662 individuals undergoing breast reconstruction after mastectomy found that 48 of them developed eczema. This represents about 2.89% of the participants in the study.
Eczema has also been associated with a condition known as breast implant illness (BII). Although BII is not officially recognized as a distinct medical condition, a 2022 research review suggested that there could be a causal relationship between breast implants and symptoms such as eczema. Some experts believe BII could be linked to an autoimmune response called autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA).
Other symptoms commonly associated with BII include:
- Chronic fatigue
- Joint and muscle pain
- Increased body temperature
- Dry eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes
- Cognitive difficulties, often referred to as “brain fog”
However, research on the causes of BII symptoms is still in its early stages, and there is no consensus on the mechanisms behind them. Patients are advised to be cautious of unfounded claims regarding the toxicity of breast implants. For example, claims that implants leach harmful chemicals into the body, requiring detoxification, are not supported by scientific evidence.
If someone develops new eczema symptoms after breast augmentation, it is essential to consult with their surgical team. The symptoms of eczema can often resemble a skin infection, a potential complication after any surgery. A doctor can assess the area and provide a proper diagnosis.
In cases of eczema following breast implant surgery, individuals should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any of the following:
- Fever or chills
- Swelling
- Pain
- Pus or fluid leakage from the skin
- Blisters or ulcers
- A rapidly spreading rash
Prompt evaluation by a healthcare provider is important to rule out any complications and ensure appropriate care.
