The Aesthetics Centre in Olympia made history on 26 September by successfully performing Namibia’s first-ever hair transplant, a groundbreaking achievement in the country’s healthcare sector.

Part of the Emoneko Group, the Centre’s team consisted of skilled Namibian medical professionals, including Dr. Natasha Esterhuizen, Dr. La-Toya Mwoombola-Hamutenya, and aesthetician Esmarie Smit. These professionals underwent extensive training under renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr. Pradip Atodaria from Surat, India, to perform this pioneering procedure.

“This significant milestone underscores Namibia’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge medical treatments locally, eliminating the need for patients to pursue costly and time-consuming procedures abroad,” the Centre noted in a statement.

The medical team received specialized training in the advanced Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique—a minimally invasive method for hair restoration. The FUE technique involves the precise extraction and implantation of individual hair follicles, offering natural-looking results with minimal scarring. The procedure was supported by registered nurses Jacobina Nampala and Armas Shifotoka, who were trained as assistant technicians.

Dr. Atodaria, with 27 years of experience in hair transplant surgery, played a crucial role in mentoring the Namibian team. His expertise in the latest hair restoration techniques enabled the team to address common causes of hair loss, such as androgenic and traction alopecia.

The Centre revealed that the first procedure involved the transplantation of 1,200 hair grafts. In the days following, additional transplants were performed, with a single patient receiving up to 3,000 grafts over the course of three consecutive days.

By introducing hair transplant services to Namibia, the Centre hopes to provide a solution for those suffering from hair loss, which can impact self-esteem and emotional well-being. The availability of this service eliminates the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment, making it a more accessible and affordable option.

Dr. Jonathan Joffe, ophthalmologist and owner of the medical facility at Olympia Eye Laser Centre, emphasized that their goal is to ensure that Namibians have access to world-class medical procedures in their own country. “By training local professionals, we are building long-term capacity for high-quality care and positioning Namibia as a potential hub for medical tourism,” Dr. Joffe added.
