The incidence of breast cancer is surging, with a concerning rise in cases among younger women, according to Prof. Anand Mishra, head of the Endocrine Surgery Department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Prof. Mishra underscored the urgent need for awareness and timely intervention to combat the disease.
Prof. Mishra revealed that breast cancer now affects 30 out of every 1,000 women, with 5% of these cases linked to genetic factors. He stressed that early detection and treatment are crucial in overcoming breast cancer.
To address these concerns, the Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) will hold its 12th annual conference and workshop on breast cancer at KGMU from August 2-4. The event will bring together approximately 500 experts from India and around the world to discuss the latest advancements in treatment techniques and medications. The conference will be inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Soniya Nityanand.
Prof. Ashray Anand highlighted the dangers of incomplete treatment, noting that it significantly increases the risk of cancer recurrence. He cautioned that the reappearance of a lump after surgery or the spread of the disease to other organs indicates a failure in treatment.
On a positive note, Dr. Kulranjan reported the introduction of three new drugs that have shown effectiveness in managing even advanced-stage breast cancer, offering hope for better disease control.
The upcoming conference aims to equip medical professionals with the latest knowledge and strategies to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients and combat the rising prevalence of the disease.
