In a remarkable display of community generosity, the Kitimat Humane Society has exceeded its fundraising target, securing over $4,000 to cover the cost of surgery for a dog named Isis. This surpasses the initial goal of $3,000, with the additional funds set to assist other animals in need of medical care.

Isis, a two-year-old Cane Corso, was admitted to the humane society four months ago in a severely emaciated state. She was suffering from cherry eye, a condition where the tear ducts protrude and cover the eye, often necessitating surgical correction if not addressed promptly.

After a period of recovery and giving birth to two puppies, Isis was scheduled for the necessary surgery. “We reached out to the public, and the support has been overwhelming,” said Ouellet, a spokesperson for the society. “We were astonished by how quickly people responded to help Isis. It truly reflects the compassion and generosity of our community.”

Originally planned for last Tuesday, the surgery was postponed as Isis entered her heat cycle. It is now rescheduled for August 13, with veterinary costs already covered. “Isis has endured so much, and it is encouraging to know that she will soon be pain-free and able to lead a normal life,” Ouellet added.

Cherry eye, if left untreated, can result in persistent tearing and infections. Until the surgery, Isis is being managed with daily eye drops. “Once the surgery is completed, she will return to being just like a normal dog,” confirmed Ouellet.

The additional funds raised will be utilized for other animals requiring medical attention at the humane society. “Every bit helps. We have many animals here still waiting for veterinary care,” Ouellet concluded.
