Jill Martin Brooks, aged 48, recently reflected on her journey with cancer, revealing the advice from her oncologist, Dr. Eric Winer, who encouraged her to reclaim her life. “That’s exactly what (I’ve) been doing,” the TODAY contributor shared.

Diagnosed over a year ago with stage 2 breast cancer following the discovery of a BRCA2 mutation, Jill recounted the aggressive treatments she underwent, including a double mastectomy, removal of 17 lymph nodes, and rigorous chemotherapy that included doxorubicin, known as the “red devil.” She subsequently completed 16 days of radiation and opted for preventative surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Currently, Jill is managing her treatment with two oral chemotherapy medications, one for the next year and the second for the next 7 to 10 years. Despite the challenges, Jill maintains a profound sense of gratitude. “I feel very grateful actually,” she emphasized, describing herself as still feeling like “the luckiest person in the world.”

Motivated by her experience, Jill aims to raise awareness about BRCA gene mutations and hopes her story will inspire others to undergo testing. Her advocacy has already made a significant impact, prompting many individuals, including her college housemate Melissa, to get tested. Melissa, upon discovering she had a BRCA2 mutation, underwent preventive surgeries.

Looking ahead, Jill faces breast reconstruction surgery on July 9, which she hopes will mark the conclusion of her current medical procedures. Reflecting on her journey, Jill likened herself to a disco ball, “a lot of pieces somehow put back together in a new and beautiful way.”

Throughout her ordeal, Jill found solace in the support of loved ones and colleagues, as well as the outpouring of compassion from viewers and strangers alike. She acknowledges the lasting impact of her cancer journey, acknowledging that “being a cancer survivor is forever with you as part of your fabric for better or worse.”

Despite the challenges, Jill continues to work and has plans to launch a new business in the near future. She looks forward to embracing new adventures, including travel, after a period of focusing on her health.

“I did this publicly, and it almost made it easier because people were so compassionate,” Jill reflected gratefully, expressing her appreciation for the love and support she and her family have received.
