Selena Gomez didn’t allow anyone to speculate that she had plastic surgery and took to TikTok to clarify what she had done to calm some of the noise.
The “Building” star commented on a 2023 video shared by Marissa Barrionuevo, a physician assistant at a plastic surgery clinic in Florida. In the video, she uploaded a profile photo of Gomez at the request of a fan. Barrionuevo did not make any judgments about Gomez’s appearance, but only pointed out that the changes to her facial structure may be caused by her health issues, including lupus.
“I feel like she’s been through so much in her life, especially medically, that it’s not fair to speculate on whether or not she’s had plastic surgery,” she said. “At the end of the day, just leave her alone.”
Despite Barrionuevo’s friendly response to speculation about Gomez’s possible plastic surgery, the Rare Beauty founder fired back in the post’s comments section, writing, “Honestly, I hate this. I have goose bumps from a lupus flare-up. I got Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.” (Stipes was likely referring to Gomez’s experience taking steroids to manage her lupus, some of the side effects of long-term use of steroids are weight gain and swelling in the face — also known as “moon face.”)
After seeing Gomez’s comments, Barrionuevo apologized to the star for her offensive behavior. “I adore you. I mean the best for you, so I’m sorry if this was offensive,” she said, adding, “You have no business telling us why you look different now than you did in your teens or 20s.”
“I love you,” Gomez responded in the comments section. “It’s not about you, I just get sad sometimes.”
Gomez has spoken publicly about her relationship with social media in the past, saying it wasn’t always good for her mental health. “Instagram was my whole world, and it was really dangerous. In my early twenties, I didn’t feel pretty enough,” she told InStyle in 2022. “Taking a break from social media for my mental health was the best decision I ever made. I created a system where I don’t have to set a password now. Once I put my phone down, all the unnecessary hate and comparisons went away.”
