The Rising Trend: More Men Opting For Plastic Surgery To Stay Competitive And Youthful

by Amelia

For a long time, plastic surgery was mainly for women who wanted to look younger and their best. But now, more and more men are going to the plastic surgeon’s office as part of their health and fitness routine.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says male plastic surgery increased by 8 percent in the past year. And more growth is expected in the coming years.

In Southwest Florida, it’s the same story. Dr. Stephen Prendiville, a facial plastic surgeon in Fort Myers, says, “The way women think about their appearance is very important to their self – image. But there are reasons men also look into facial aesthetic surgery. A change in life, like getting divorced, starting a new job, or getting back into dating, can make men consider plastic surgery.”

He also said that many men retire after 65. They want to look younger to stay competitive at work. People who work remotely and have lots of Zoom meetings or video calls often stare at their own faces on the screen for a long time. They notice things they want to change. Social media also plays a role. When men see celebrities talking openly about facial rejuvenation, they also want to look as young as they feel. Plastic surgery isn’t as much of a taboo subject as it used to be.

Shows like “Yellowstone” have made some men want a stronger, more defined jawline like the actors, such as Kevin Costner.

In Southwest Florida, the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures for men are eyelid surgery to get rid of extra skin or bags under the eyes, nose surgery, and facelifts to remove jowls and get a more muscular – looking jawline. Sometimes, men also get chin implants.

Prendiville added, “Men want to fix these specific problems, but they’re also really worried about looking feminine, strange, or losing their own identity. When they see that’s not likely to happen, they get more interested. They don’t want to look like someone else.” Facial plastic surgeons often bring up musician Kenny Rogers. After his facial plastic surgery, he didn’t look like himself anymore.

For men, plastic surgery procedures need to be strong enough to work but also conservative enough to keep normal function, a manly look, and their identity.

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the world’s biggest group of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons, says the male facial plastic surgery boom will probably keep going for many more years. A recent survey of its members showed that 44 percent of AAFPRS members think more men will have surgeries and treatments in the future.

Picking the right surgeon is just as important as choosing the right procedure. Don’t start looking for a surgeon on Facebook groups or social media chat rooms.

Instead, Prendiville says to start your online research on reliable websites like Real Self. It’s the biggest online place for people to learn about cosmetic procedures, share their experiences, and find the right providers.

Prendiville, who was honored in the Real Self 100 and 500 Hall of Fame for answering public questions online, said, “Millions of people from all over the world visit Real Self every month. They look at patient reviews, before – and – after photos, and answers from medical experts to see which treatments and providers are really ‘worth it’.”

When choosing a board – certified facial plastic surgeon, their credentials are always important.
Steve Jurich, the CEO and executive vice president of the AAFPS, says, “The most important thing is to find the right, most qualified doctor for any procedure. Always pick a surgeon who’s trained specifically in face, head, and neck procedures. Make sure the doctor is qualified, experienced, and board – certified for the procedure you want.”
