Elon Musk’s relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the singer Grimes, is full of ups and downs and is quite complicated. It often plays out in public, especially on Musk’s social network platform, X (which was previously known as Twitter). Over the years, the two have sent each other messages that show support as well as some not-so-nice remarks. Even though their relationship has been on and off, they have had three children together. During all this time, Musk hasn’t been afraid to use the public nature of the platform to communicate with Grimes and influence her decisions in a subtle way.
This was exactly what happened in March 2025. At that time, Musk took to Twitter (before he officially bought it and renamed it X) to try and convince the singer of the song “Oblivion” not to have a rather fantastical cosmetic surgery. Specifically, Grimes had been talking to her followers about possible body changes. She asked, “Has anyone had elf ear modifications with good results? I’m worried that the ear cartilage will have a hard time healing.
Especially as a musician, this surgery seems risky, but I’ve wanted it my whole life.”
Musk’s reply to Grimes’ post was short. This reply came just a few months after they secretly had their third child, Techno “Tau” Mechanicus. His response was simple, almost in a nitpicky way: “The bad things about elf ear surgery probably are more than the good things.”
Musk’s response got more than three times as many likes as Grimes’ original post, and it seemed to change the singer’s mind. Later, she said that genetic modification might be a better option, and she was sad that she was “born a few generations too early.”
