Doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital carried out their very first lower limb replantation surgery on an 8 – year – old tribal girl from Mayurbhanj district.
On March 14, the girl was in a road accident. Her left leg was severed from the lower thigh. She was rushed to SCB Medical College. There, a team of doctors from different departments – plastic surgery, orthopaedics, and anaesthesia – worked together. They performed a complex surgery that lasted four hours.
Dr Bibhuti Nayak, the head of the plastic surgery department and leader of the surgical team, said, “This case was extremely challenging because of how severe the injury was and the fact that the patient was so young.”
The surgery involved carefully fixing bones, blood vessels, muscles, and nerves. Dr Nayak also said, “The replanted limb is doing well.” Right now, the girl is being watched in the paediatric ICU. She will stay there for 48 hours and then be moved to the plastic surgery ward.
