A mother from Scotland has said she feels like she’s “dying a slow death” because of her breast implant. This comes as there are warnings that hundreds of other women are facing the same problem.
The 57 – year – old woman says she has been so distressed that she has had suicidal thoughts due to breast implant illness (BII). BII is a term used for various health problems linked to breast implants. But in the UK, it’s not an officially recognized medical diagnosis. She spoke up after a Scottish cosmetic surgery expert told the Record that “hundreds” of women are going through this difficult situation with little help from the NHS.
Women with BII say they have symptoms like brain fog, joint pain, tiredness, and anxiety. Hannah Spearritt from S Club 7 has also shared her own experience with this issue before. However, some doctors still doubt if BII really exists.
This mother had breast reconstruction on the NHS 20 years ago after having lumps removed. She told the Record that she only found out about BII last year, even though she had been feeling unwell for a long time. But she doesn’t have the money to have her implants removed privately. She’s also worried that if she waits for the NHS to do the removal surgery, it will take a very long time.
The woman, who is a carer from Glasgow, said, “I’m constantly tired. I hurt all over, from my head to my toes. My anxiety is really bad. I feel like an old lady. I can barely walk because I’m so weak and my back hurts a lot. It’s also affecting my memory.
“I had a 17 – centimeter cyst near my ovaries. Even though it’s been taken out, my belly still looks like I’m pregnant. I never thought my implants could be the cause until six months ago.
“Since my blood tests don’t show anything, it seems like this isn’t a real problem to others. I feel like no one is taking me seriously. The other night, I called NHS 24 and the Samaritans because I felt like I couldn’t keep living like this. I feel like I’m slowly dying. I just want these implants out.”
