A woman, Edith Eagle, said she felt like she was “drowning” in her own body. This happened after she had a serious reaction to a nasal tanning spray.
Tan – enhancing products are not new. But Edith Eagle ended up in hospital and couldn’t breathe. She had a severe reaction to an unlicensed nasal tanning spray she bought online. The 47 – year – old thought the nasal tanning spray was “brilliant” when a friend told her about it. But then she couldn’t see, and her neck and face swelled up.
These sprays are sold with Barbie – inspired designs. They come in pink packaging and seem to have the official Barbie logo. However, they are linked to skin cancer, kidney disease, and erectile dysfunction. To get a Barbie – like tan, people can easily buy these sprays online. Nasal tanners are made to be sprayed into the nostrils. They claim to work by using a substance called Melanotan II. This chemical darkens skin pigmentation. In the UK, it’s illegal to sell medicinal products with Melanotan II. But these tanners are sold as cosmetics, so they are not covered by that law.
Edith Eagle, from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, bought the tanners online. She thought they would give her a quick and easy bronzed look before her April 2023 holiday to Fuerteventura. But she didn’t know they were unlicensed and not regulated.
She used the spray twice a day. She thought it would give her tan time to develop before she went out in the sun. But on the second day of her trip, she had to be rushed to hospital. Her allergic reaction got very bad.
“I really couldn’t breathe. All I could think was, would I even make it to the hospital because I couldn’t breathe. I can’t describe it. I was suffocating inside. It was like drowning in my own body,” she said, according to the BBC.
