The California Medical Board is charging a doctor who owns a cosmetic surgery center in La Jolla with gross negligence.
According to a recent allegation posted online, Dr. Robert Shumway’s answers to committee investigators were “evasive, untrustworthy, intransparent, and contradicted by relevant medical records.” The medical board opened an investigation into Shumway after two female patients developed complications following surgery at his cosmetic surgery center.
According to the Committee, patient A’s breast implants sagged and sagged. She returned to Shumway for the breast augmentation and lifting surgery, which took nearly seven hours. The procedure usually takes two to three hours, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In the complaint, the committee said Shumway used an “inappropriate surgical incision” and did not use proper external pressure, such as a compression suit, after surgery.
The second patient complained of complications after undergoing a tummy tuck and a Brazilian hip lift. In investigating her case, the medical board said Shumway had provided “false” information to investigators during an interview last year.
The allegation is Shumway’s latest run-in with the medical board.
Last year, Team 10 reported that the doctor had been censured by the committee for failing to equip a patient in need of intensive care with resuscitation equipment.
The woman, who had hired the doctor for a laser facial to improve her skin condition, was intubated as she left his office and rushed to the emergency room.
In 2018, the Medical board reprimanded Shumway for misleading advertising practices when he claimed on his website that he had six board certifications.
His website now shows that he is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The medical board told Team 10 that it only recognizes accreditation from the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Shumway did not respond to Team 10’s request for comment on the matter.
