More and more Ukrainian women are abandoning artificial appearance and opting for natural beauty. Blogger and dietitian Katerina Krupkina is one of those who has publicly supported the trend, having her breast implants removed after 11 years of wearing them. Her experience has resonated on social media, prompting many women to re-examine their attitudes to cosmetic surgery.

Ukrainian blogger and dietitian Katerina Krupkina has caused a stir on social media after admitting her decision to remove breast implants after 11 years. In a video she posted on Instagram, which garnered 7.5 million views, she said she was obsessed with breast implants. She noted that finally realizing the implants didn’t make her happier, healthier or more attractive. After the five-hour operation in Uzhhorod, which cost 390,000 hryvnia, she also decided to return her lips to their natural size and stop using Botox. Katerina admits that her story has left hundreds of women doubting the need for cosmetic surgery, with some even deciding to have their implants removed. Plastic surgeons in Ukraine have taken note of the phenomenon.
Andriy Riznyk, head of plastic surgery at the cosmetic hospital in the city of Lviv, said discomfort, infection and fear of possible complications, including prosthetic-associated lymphoma, were part of the reason for removing the implants.
In 2019, Allergan’s textured prosthetics were pulled from the market after being linked to lymphatic cancer cases. Although the risk of developing this condition is considered low, the International Association of Plastic Surgeons recommends that patients be informed of the potential risks. The natural beauty trend is also affecting the beauty industry. Beauticians are seeing an increase in demand to remove fillers from lips, cheekbones and chins. Yaroslav Lata, a dermatologist at the Oberig clinic in Kiev, noted that sometimes fillings change the shape of the face so much that customers decide to remove them.
The process of breaking down the filling with hyaluronidase is painful, but in some cases unavoidable, because the filling can shift and form unsightly “hyaluronic acid tendrils.” Despite this, women who have decided to go back to their natural beauty are increasingly opting for more natural lip shapes rather than plump plump effects. Whether the trend toward natural beauty will last in the long term is an open question, but surgeons and estheticians in Ukraine are already sensing a shift in attitudes toward cosmetic surgery.
