In an unfolding political controversy, Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, has found herself under scrutiny for a two-week absence in July 2023, during which she underwent a nose surgery that she claims was medically necessary, not cosmetic. Boluarte, 62, appeared before prosecutors to explain her absence, which some lawmakers have deemed an abandonment of her presidential duties.
The investigation into Boluarte’s unexplained absence began after the public learned that she had been recovering from rhinoplasty for “breathing problems” at a clinic in Lima. However, critics argue that the president failed to follow legal procedures by not informing the public or delegating her responsibilities to Congress during her recovery period. Boluarte did not appoint a caretaker president, a necessary step when a sitting leader is absent from office. This omission has led some to call for her removal from office.
Despite the controversy surrounding her medical procedure, Boluarte’s team has defended her actions, asserting that she continued her duties virtually while recuperating. However, the lack of transparency and the secrecy surrounding her surgery have only fueled speculation and raised questions about the state of governance under her leadership.
This incident is just the latest in a series of challenges for Boluarte. She is also under investigation for accusations of accepting bribes, including luxury items like Rolex watches and jewelry. In addition, she faces scrutiny over the violent crackdown on protests in 2022, which resulted in the deaths of more than 50 demonstrators. Boluarte has denied any wrongdoing in these matters.
Boluarte assumed the presidency in December 2022, following the impeachment and imprisonment of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo. As his vice president, Boluarte stepped into the top role after Castillo’s failed attempt to dissolve Congress, which led to his removal. However, her lack of a political party in Congress and an approval rating nearing 95% disapproval have made her presidency fraught with challenges.
Peru has struggled with political instability in recent years, with six different presidents having taken office over the past eight years. Boluarte’s presidency is expected to end in July 2026, but with ongoing scandals and a deeply divided political landscape, her tenure remains highly uncertain.
