Just two years after getting a reprimand and a fine following a Brazilian butt – lift (BBL) – related death, a Miami plastic surgeon, Dr. Oliver Simmons, has landed in hot water again. This time, he’s facing a state complaint regarding his actions after another BBL procedure.
The administrative complaint against Dr. Simmons was filed on January 3. It pertains to a surgery that took place in 2024 when he was working at New Life Plastic Surgery, located at 8400 SW Eighth St. In 2024, the records of New Life Plastic Surgery were marred by liposuction – related deaths. Three out of the eight surgeons listed on the clinic’s website were involved in these tragic incidents.
In Florida, administrative complaints from the Department of Health kick – start the professional discipline process for doctors. This process can end in different ways. A doctor might be exonerated, or the Board of Medicine could take action against them.
Dr. Simmons graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1998. Before the death of Tanisha Walker in April 2022, he had a clean disciplinary record in both Florida and South Carolina. He held licenses in both states until his South Carolina license lapsed in 2021. Dr. Simmons is board – certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery).
Tanisha Walker died from a pulmonary embolism. The Florida Department of Health alleged that this was caused by Dr. Simmons illegally injecting fat into Walker’s gluteal muscles during a BBL. After this incident, the Board of Medicine took several actions against Dr. Simmons. They reprimanded him, slapped him with a $10,000 fine, charged him the maximum reimbursement cost of $9,588.76, ordered him to give a one – hour lecture on the safety and potential complications of BBL surgeries, and required him to use ultrasound guidance during his BBL procedures for six months after the final order.
