Botox Offers Relief for Patients with “No Burp Syndrome”

by Alice

A new application of Botox is helping patients find relief from “no burp syndrome,” a condition that prevents them from burping. While Botox is widely known for its cosmetic uses, it is gaining popularity as a treatment for this common health issue, especially following recent discussions on TikTok.

Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, a facial plastic surgeon at Ohio’s Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center, explains that the cricopharyngeus muscle can sometimes spasm, leading to the inability to release gas. Botox works by relaxing this muscle, enabling patients to burp and relieve trapped gas, which can cause discomfort and bloating.

A study by the NIH involving over 200 patients found that 99% of those treated with Botox regained the ability to burp, with 93% achieving this within a week. Long-lasting effects were also noted, as the body can retrain itself to burp after treatment. Mendelsohn highlights that if relief isn’t experienced after the first injection, 75% of patients receiving a second treatment reported long-term relief. This innovative use of Botox provides a promising solution for those struggling with this often-overlooked condition.
