Breast surgery

A 50-year-old woman, Helen Comin from Cittadella, Padua, died on September 10 after a series of complications following breast surgery at a private clinic. Comin had undergone a procedure to replace breast implants at the DiviClinic in Castelfranco, operated by Dr. Antonio di Vincenzo.

Comin, who was married to an entrepreneur and mother of four, experienced sudden cardiac arrest about 40 minutes post-surgery. Initially, the procedure appeared to go smoothly, with no immediate complications reported. According to Dr. di Vincenzo, the surgery was straightforward and performed with light sedation administered by an anesthesiologist, Fabio Toffoletto. The patient was monitored closely in the post-operative room and was even sitting up before the cardiac event occurred.

Following the arrest, the clinic staff administered resuscitation, which was continued by emergency services upon their arrival. Comin was then transferred to the intensive care unit at San Giacomo Hospital in Castelfranco. Despite five days of intensive care, she passed away.

The Treviso Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident, with Dr. di Vincenzo and Dr. Toffoletto currently under investigation for possible manslaughter. The autopsy, overseen by Prosecutor Giovanni Valmassoi and conducted by Claudio Terranova from the University of Padua, aims to determine whether the surgery had any direct relation to the sudden cardiac arrest. An expert in anesthesia will assist with the investigation.

Dr. di Vincenzo expressed his condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened and shocked by what happened and extend our sympathy to Mrs. Comin’s family.”
