‘Six-Pack Surgery’ Gaining Popularity Among Men, Say Plastic Surgeons

Move over, “Dad bod”—the pursuit of the perfect six-pack is now driving more men to explore a cosmetic procedure known as high-definition liposuction. This surgical technique, also referred to as “ab-etching,” is becoming increasingly popular among men who struggle to achieve defined abdominal muscles through exercise alone.

High-definition liposuction is an advanced form of liposuction that not only removes excess fat but also sculpts the abdominal muscles to create the appearance of a chiseled six-pack. Dr. Josef Hadeed, a board-certified plastic surgeon, explains that while traditional liposuction focuses on removing fat broadly, high-definition liposuction is more targeted.

“This technique involves removing fat from specific areas to emphasize the natural muscle contours and create the illusion of a six-pack,” Hadeed says. “We focus on the vertical and horizontal lines above and below the belly button to enhance the muscular definition.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has reported a notable increase in requests for high-definition liposuction. Dr. Joubin Gabbay, an ASPS member, confirms this trend. “Men are increasingly seeking out this procedure for a more defined, athletic look,” he says.

Dr. Finny George, another board-certified plastic surgeon, adds that societal acceptance of male cosmetic surgery and dissatisfaction with conventional methods are driving this trend. “Men are looking for alternative ways to achieve an athletic physique, especially when traditional diet and exercise have not yielded the desired results,” George notes.

High-definition liposuction isn’t the only procedure on the rise among men. Since 2019, there’s been a 207% increase in total cosmetic procedures among males, according to the 2022 ASPS report. Factors contributing to this surge include a desire for a youthful appearance and the influence of social media.

Dr. Hadeed highlights that while the procedure can deliver impressive results, it requires careful consideration. “Patients should have realistic expectations and understand that this procedure is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle,” he advises.

For those considering high-definition liposuction, it’s crucial to evaluate the reasons for wanting the procedure. “Do it for yourself, not because of external pressures,” Hadeed recommends. Additionally, potential patients should research their surgeon’s credentials and ensure they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for preserving the results. “It’s important to keep up with a good diet and exercise regimen to avoid major weight fluctuations,” advises Dr. Gabbay. “Unintended weight gain can affect the results and make the six-pack appear less natural.”

As with any surgery, high-definition liposuction carries risks, including skin or fat necrosis, blood clots, and intestinal perforation. “Understanding these risks and discussing them with your surgeon is vital,” Hadeed emphasizes.

Overall, while high-definition liposuction offers an option for achieving a sculpted physique, it should be approached with careful planning and realistic expectations.
