In a significant humanitarian effort, over 3,000 patients from the Kura/Garunmalam/Madobi federal constituency in Kano State have undergone free eye surgeries, restoring their vision and significantly improving their quality of life.
Initiative by Umar Datti Foundation
The surgeries were organized by the Umar Datti Foundation, an initiative established by Yusuf Datti, a member of the House of Representatives. The surgeries took place recently in Kura, where the foundation provided much-needed eye care services to residents suffering from various vision problems.
Importance of Accessible Eye Care
Addressing the media, Yusuf Datti highlighted the importance of the eye care program. He explained that the initiative was designed to alleviate the suffering of those with eye conditions, many of whom had been living with impaired vision for years. Datti emphasized the critical nature of the program, equating blindness to a “life death,” and underscored the need for accessible and affordable eye care in the community.
Commitment to Development Despite Challenges
Datti also reassured the public of his ongoing commitment to delivering more developmental projects in the constituency. He acknowledged the economic challenges currently facing the nation but stressed that such hurdles would not deter his efforts to bring further improvements to the region.
Support from Kano State Health Officials
The initiative has received praise from the Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf. Speaking at the Kura General Hospital, where the surgeries were conducted, Dr. Yusuf commended the foundation’s efforts. He called on other elected officials and affluent individuals to follow Yusuf Datti’s example by supporting similar initiatives in various health sectors across the state. “Some patients will require surgical operations, while others will need medical glasses, drugs, or eye drops,” Dr. Yusuf added, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the care provided.
Gratitude from Beneficiaries
One of the beneficiaries, 62-year-old Abubakar Kadawa, expressed his deep gratitude to Yusuf Datti for the restoration of his sight after a decade of vision impairment. Kadawa’s story is just one of many, illustrating the profound impact the free eye surgery initiative has had on the lives of those in the Kura/Garunmalam/Madobi constituency.
