Mariana Martins, a prominent journalist from Brazil, has disclosed that she contracted a bacterial infection following a procedure to replace her silicone breast implants.

In a video posted on her Instagram on Tuesday, Martins, who formerly worked with Record Goiás and TV Anhanguera, explained that she underwent surgery in March. Shortly after the procedure, she began experiencing a burning sensation. A subsequent visit to her surgeon revealed the presence of fluid accumulation under a scar. Tissue samples were sent to a laboratory for analysis.

By late June, just before her wedding, Martins received the test results, which indicated a mycobacteria infection. As a result, she has been forced to delay her wedding and is now grappling with the uncertainty of her recovery.

“My infectious disease specialist was unequivocal in stating that the infection occurred during the surgery,” Martins said in her video. “He could not determine if the contamination was related to the prosthesis or another source.”

Martins adhered to her doctor’s recommendation and underwent a procedure to remove the implants on July 10. The preceding months of uncertainty and the aftermath of the surgery have been emotionally taxing for her.

“I find strength through faith in God, despite the many moments of pain and doubt,” Martins shared. “This infection is complex and takes a long time to heal. Treatment might extend up to a year and a half with antibiotics, and I am still unsure of the duration.”

Mycobacteria can lead to conditions such as tuberculosis and leprosy. Symptoms may include weight loss, cough, weakness, fever, chills, and loss of appetite.

“I am determined to overcome this,” Martins concluded. “I am hopeful that my health will be fully restored and that my wedding, scheduled for August, will go as planned.”
