Christina Applegate revealed on her ‘Messy’ podcast that she underwent plastic surgery years ago to remove eye bags, prompted by a producer’s criticism on a TV set. The 52-year-old actress recounted how the producer, known for a popular TV show, expressed difficulty in lighting her due to the size of her eye bags.
She explained, “I was on a show and one of the producers – a very famous (producer) who did a very famous show as well – said, ‘Hey, we’re having a lot of trouble lighting under your eyes. The bags under your eyes are so big.'” Applegate, sharing her decision at 27 to undergo surgery to address the hereditary issue, added, “You know what I did? At 27 years old, I had the only plastic surgery I’ve ever had to remove the bags under my eyes… I went under.”
Reflecting on the producer’s comments, Applegate criticized the impact it had on her self-image, stating he made her feel “shame” and planted insecurities about her appearance. This discussion follows her previous confrontation with online criticism, where she addressed speculation about her looks being due to plastic surgery instead of her battle with multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 2021. Applegate responded on Twitter, expressing her disbelief at the comment and questioning, “What is wrong with people?”
Beyond cosmetic concerns, Applegate opened up about the profound impact of her health challenges, including her MS diagnosis, on her emotional well-being. She revealed in June that these struggles led her into a state of depression, though she clarified later that she was managing and not in immediate crisis.
