Christina Applegate has felt the pressure of Hollywood for real, revealing on the July 30 episode of the MeSsy podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler that a producer suggested and encouraged her to get plastic surgery due to a simple lighting issue on set.
“I was on a show when I was 27, and one of the producers — who had a very famous show himself — said, ‘Hey, we’re having a hard time lighting under your eyes. You have big bags under your eyes,’” Applegate shared. “And then he said, ‘I suggest you take them out.’”
“The only plastic surgery I’ve ever had was to get rid of my bags under my eyes,” she continued. “I had surgery to get rid of them. I was 27. People plant those things, those seeds, in your head.”
Although Applegate only had a lower eyelid lift (officially known as a blepharoplasty), the actress revealed that she wanted to get more done with a thread lift. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a thread lift “uses temporary sutures to give the skin a subtle but noticeable ‘lift.’ Rather than surgically removing the patient’s loose facial skin, the plastic surgeon simply sutures portions of the skin to suspend it.”
However, Applegate was turned down for surgery. “He said, ‘I can’t do it because your face is too fat,'” she recalled. “So I didn’t do it. It was painful, but I also respect doctors who say, ‘If it doesn’t work, I’m not charging you.'” The “Bringing Home” star also noted that doctors “didn’t want to do it” because they were “concerned” about possible complications from her multiple sclerosis, even though her neurologist said it was fine. Now, Applegate has accepted her situation and embraced it.
“It’s like, what you see is what you get, man,” she said. “I mean, I didn’t know what else to do. All I could think of was, ‘Well, should I do this?’ And I was like, ‘I’m staying home the whole time.'”
